How To Identify, Exploit, and Profit From Niche Markets
By Thom Reece
There are two basic approaches to advertising or lead generation... the shotgun approach... or the rifle approach.There is only one cost efficient way... the rifle approach.
By carefully selecting specific niche markets, or market segments, and presenting a compelling message directly to that audience, you will begin to reap the real profit rewards of direct marketing.
First let's define a "niche" market. I define it as: "Any homogeneous market in which the members of the group have similar occupational, interests, or lifestyle characteristics... those characteristics being ones which would make them an excellent prospect to benefit from your services... and/or consume your products.
HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF TARGETING OCCUPATIONAL MARKETS FOR A "WELLNESS" NICHE...
Some of the niche markets are obvious:
* Chiropractors
* Medical Doctors, Nurses
* Health Food Stores
* Fitness Centers
* Spas, Health Retreats
* Acupuncturists, Massage Therapists, etc.
* Veterinarians, Pet Clinics, Pet Shops (wellness is not limited to humans)
NICHE LIFESTYLE AND DEMOGRAPHIC RELATED MARKETS...
=> Senior citizens or "baby boomers"
=> Specific Disease Sufferers... cancer, diabetes, arthritis, ADD, Lupus, etc. (Remember, we can make NO claims.)
=> Pre-natal, Pregnant Women, Babies, Parenting
=> Sports participants and enthusiasts
=> Health & Fitness Buyers
=> Vitamin, Supplement, Remedy Buyers
=> Etc. Etc.
HOW TO TARGET THE NICHE...
Regardless of how you intend to approach the niche with your marketing message... print advertising, broadcast, direct mail, e-mail marketing, etc. ... you have to identify resources that can supply the targeted pathway for your message.
The first place to look... and a pure qualifier for whether you have identified a real niche in the first place... is to look for magazines and other print media (newsletters) that are targeted specifically to that defined market... and that can supply you with targeted mailing lists (snail mail or opt-in email) , print advertising vehicles (magazines, newsletters, newspapers, trade journals, etc.), to cost effectively reach the niche.
Where do you find these resources? The easiest and fastest way is to do a search at Google (or your favorite search engine) for terms that closely identity the target audience.
For purposes of example let's use the occupational niche of Chiropractors:
Searching Google for "chiropractic magazines" will show us a link... http://www.chiro.org/LINKS/journal.shtml ... which will in-turn identify several publications which show promise:
* Chiropractic Economics
* DC Products Review
* Dynamic Chiropractic
* Today's Chiropractic
Once you have identified several publications that serve the niche market, your next step is to contact each publication and request a "full media kit" from the advertising department. The publications ad department will send you a copy of the publication, advertising rate card, and other marketing materials touting the advantages of advertising with them.
SELECTING MEDIA...
Study the contents of the media kit carefully. Especially look at the ads which could be considered competitors for your product. If you are lucky enough to live near a large university or public library here is a trick used by many savvy advertisers... go the library and see if there is an old copy of the magazine in question. Go back at least a year or two. If you find the same advertisers in the old publications you can safely assume that the publication is pulling a profit for their advertising. This is not fail-safe... but it is a good indicator.
Also, don't be afraid to pick up the phone and call an existing advertiser, or two--or ten, and ask them how the publication pulls for them. Direct competitors will be reluctant to talk with you about this... but non-competitors will usually respond with some good information.
Be alert to the difference between "circulation" and "readership". Only make your advertising decisions on the basis of verified circulation. Readership is a figure that publications like to toss around to inflate the perceived importance and size of their audience. The only real measure worthy of your consideration is their "audited circulation".
TESTING...
Only test one niche publication at a time unless you have very sophisticated ad tracking available to you. If the niche is unresponsive to your offer in one publication... there is a very good chance that it will be unresponsive in all the other publications which address that niche. Refine your offer... and test the same publication again. If it fails the second time with a completely different offer... then you might want to re-evaluate that niche.
MAILING LISTS...
Make sure that you inquire as to whether or not the publication will rent you their mailing list.
Most will rent you a set of subscribers names for a one-time use. If you rent a set of names... do not attempt to copy and re-mail those names. The lists are seeded with trace names that will alert the publications of your re-use of the names. It is a violation of the terms-of-use agreement and there is much case law to support the claims of the publication. If you are caught re-using one-time-use rental names you will be subject to fines and penalties by law.
Names are usually available by specific "sorts" or "selects"... that is, you can select names by such variables as zip code, gender, title, etc. If you are mailing to a niche market you may want to confine your original test mailing to zip codes which are close to your own... to make follow-up easier and less costly.
Names which reflect paid subscribers are more responsive and of better quality than names which are "free controlled circulation" names... although in most trade publications you will find that "controlled circulation" (free) is the norm.
Another way to approach logistics of direct mailing is to contact a "list broker" or "lettershop" in your local area and begin a relationship with a knowledgeable staff person. Define closely what you are looking for in the way of target audience and the broker will use seek out and present options for you to select from.
If you are dealing with email lists... make absolutely sure they are from double opt-in subscribers. Push the media reps for verification of this point and get guarantees to that effect in writing.
You may want to subscribe to Target Marketing Magazine, Direct, DM News, Catalog Age, and other direct marketing trade publications... all are free. They are full of marketing resources, list brokers, and helpful articles that will educate and inform you on the field of direct marketing.
Well, there you have it... a primer on targeting niche markets. The techniques described above will work to identify any niche. Targeting responsive niches will build your business quickly, profitably... and cost effectively!

Pay Per Click advertising and Article Marketing Compared
By Joel Teo
At first glance, Pay Per Click advertising seems to be the fastest way to send targeted website traffic to your websites online. You choose some keywords and add your website’s url and you are done. However, with most things online the competitive search terms are often very expensive and you spend lots of money to win the Pay Per Click wars.This article will list five reasons why article marketing may be better than Pay Per Click Advertising.
Permanent links
Anyone knows that once you stop paying for your pay per click results, you will stop getting website traffic. Articles on the other hand always stay on the pages of a high traffic website if added. This is like opening a shop in a busy shopping mall. You get more targeted website visitors this way quite easily. Once readers read the targeted articles and then click through to your website, they are in the mood to read whatever offers that you can sell and you tend to make more money this way as they treat you as an expert if they like your article. Thus in article marketing, you get traffic on a continuing basis and not just when you pay for it.
Viral effect
Not only that if publishers like your work, they put it on all their websites and send it to their newsletters with many readers and some of these readers will start clicking to your website and signing up or purchasing whatever you are promoting. Some readers if they like your article will forwarding the email to their friends and make you even more money. Some other publishers will start adding your article to their blogs and generate even more website traffic for your website that you are marketing. The more targeted website traffic the more money you will start making.
Page Rank
The basis of Search Engine Optimization (“SEO”) today is based on PageRank and website traffic. Granted that you know how you get added website traffic with article marketing, we now turn to SEO. The major search engines today looks at the number of inbound links from targeted website pointing to your website. This means that if you have a cooking website, the more links to your website from cooking websites the better. Article marketing works in the same way as if your business is on health for instance and you write health articles, your publishers are going to be health websites and your PageRank due to the number of inbound links pointing at your website will increase. Your search engine rankings will also start climbing and you will start getting more targeted website traffic and make more money.
Price
Writing your own articles and publishing them can be free as compared to paying for Pay Per Click Advertising and the more articles you write the more well known you will be and the more targeted website traffic you will get. Why spend hundreds each month on Pay Per Click advertising when you can start getting website traffic for almost free by writing articles on topics relevant to your particular internet business. But that said, time is what you will be spending so if you want the easy way out, get someone to ghost write an article for you. You can get it for $5 per article or less at websites like Elance.com or getafreelancer.com.
In conclusion, this article highlights four reasons why Article Marketing is a good way to consider especially if you are on a tight budget and its ability to send your website continuous targeted website traffic is something that you should consider carefully if you want to use this method of online promotion.

1. Create an eBook and give away resale rights with it.
It is not as hard as you might think to write your own eBook about a chosen subject, you can get most of your ideas from Private Label content, if you do not have any Private Label content I have placed some links in the resources page. Basically, you need to choose a subject that you think is going to be popular and people will be attrated to, three main categories for a good title are something that will save the reader time, something that will save the reader money and something that will explain how to do something in particular.Once you have a subject you can then find as much material on that as you can to help you write about it, again, you can use Private Label content to assist your writing. Don't forget to place lots of links to your website or product inside the eBook! Brandable eBooks are the easiest option, so long as they allow you to brand your required link.
John Thornhill goes into more detal in creating an eBook from scratch in his eBook 'Auction Profit Streams'
2. Submit an article to article directories.
You can submit an article with your link included to an article directory and when people read or use the article you will then get your link spread about, a few good article submission directories are: Ezine Articles, Best Ezines, Article Planet and Go Articles.
As an example, take a look at this article here, notice the link at the bottom of the article, you will probably not realize, but your article has the possibility of being used by others, for websites, other article directories, e-zines and more, the best bit is that your link will always be there. If you struggle for article content try splitting Private Label content and add your own spin on it. Try to be as unique as you possibly can.
3. Exchange links with other websites to promote each other.
This is another great FREE way to promote your website or product, all you have to do is to come to an agreement with another site owner that will benefit BOTH of you. Try to pick a website to exchange with that is featuring the same niche as yourself, that way you will gain the most benefit as the customer will be targetted to BOTH sites. The more links you trade the more potential traffic you could gain!
4. Write or update newslettersor blogs.
Just as you are reading this newsletter right now, the more people know about you and your partners, the more you will find loyal readers recommending you to others. Oh! ... Feel free to recommend us by the way
Try to make your newsletter as informative and interesting as possible as the more people that are interested, the more they will hopefully recommend you to others, gaining you more subscribers.
5. Email Signatures
This is another excellent FREE method of getting traffic without even lifting a finger, once you have it set up, every single email that you send out to friends, family, business clients or even your autoresponder could be a potential visitor to your website or product and if the emails are then forwarded on to others the potential traffic is excellent for the amount of work involved. Almost every email client has the 'signature' option, simply set it up with the text/html you require that might attract people to your site and that's it! Once it is set up you can just forget about it.Email signatures are a great way of letting people know that you still exist! Be careful not to spam people with this one. Here is an example:
Dave,
Planet Divinity.
www.planet-divinity.com
6. Join Forums or Chat
Ok, so you don't have to be a chatterbox to use a forum, you can read posts and have as much time to think of a reply as you like, if you are a chatterbox however, you can also utililize chat facilities. Choose a forum that is related to your chosen niche and then try to contribute in any way possible, you will gain respect and a reputation and therefore you will gain trust, trust is a very powefull thing to have earned as many people are new to things they are wary of subscribing or purchasing. You should also utilize the signature tool in forums, gaining you that extra link.
7. Use search engines to promote.
This can be a costly method, but if you do it right it could make you a fortune from the amount of traffic they can give you.
The most popular methods of search engine promotion are Google’s Adwords and Yahoo’s Overture, these are both excellent ways to guarantee traffic to your website or product. I know most people are reluctant to spend money on PPC (pay per click) advertising but it is a sure fire way of getting traffic and therefore making purchases.
Here is a brand new FREE eBook on Google Adwords just for you. Download here.
8. Find JV Partners
This is a very fast traffic rush if you can find a good JV (joint venture) partner, you will need to attract a JV partner by offering them something that you normally don't such as 50% commision, you will also have to give the JV potential partner full access to what you are selling or a copy of the product so they can decide whether or not it is worth promoting. There are many ways to find a good JV partner, basically you need to try and find somebody who is popular or who has a list on your chosen niche, forums, ezine directories (such as the ones listed above) and even search engines are a great way of finding potential partners. Look for people who generate lists and don't be afraid to ask.
9. Good Keywords
Search engines just love good keyword content, the more unique and targetted on your niche the better! Finding the right keywords or keyword phrases is not as hard as you might think, say for example you chose 'dogs' as your chosen niche, your keywords could be:
puppy dogs, dogs breeds, pet dogs, labrador dogs, beagle dogs, breeding dogs ... and so on!
There are many keyword choosing tools out there but I prefer to choose my own, Google has a great tool to help you choose some good ones. Click here
10. eBay
Yes, you heard right, eBay, this is an excellent method for creating traffic that is often overlooked, I'm sure you know that you are not allowed to have external links on your eBay listing, but you ARE however, allowed to link to your own websites from your 'about me' page in eBay, tens of thousands of eBay users swear by this technique.
To create your 'about me' page you need to log in and click on 'community' at the top of the page, near the bottom of the page you need to click on the 'create an about me page', here is a quick link, you then get the option to either enter follow the eBay step by step process or simply add your own HTML. You then just need to write a short paragraph on your own website and place your link to it there. This is a very good method of traffic as all the traffic is targeted, this means that they were attracted to your listing so they will be attracted to your website.
I hope this helps you succeed!
Talk soon,
Dave.

Here is a little experiment with some very interesting results I did to see if I could get listed in Googles search engine in under 48 hours, best of all for FREE.
Step 1. First you will need a good keyword. Pick something that you feel you could easily find content for on the internet, which is just about anything.
Step 2. Do a little research on google to see how many people have relative content for that keywood showing up in the listings. For example if you choose "Game Copy Software" you will notice in the upper right hand side of the search results about 33,800,000 pages found for that keyword combination. Thats a pretty competative combination. Try several untill you can get the results down to about 10 -20 thousand without having to use more than 3 or 4 keywords in your combination. As an example I chose "Celebrity Coochie Pop". I know it sounds weird but hay it worked.
Step 3. I set up a blogger blog, for FREE I might add, then found some recent and relative pictures on the web and added them to my new blogger site at celebrity-coochie-pop.blogspot.com.
Step 4. You will want to add a widget on the side bar, I recommend to use the new feature called "Newsreel". I typed in "celebrity gossip" and added it to the side bar which will show current information on that particular search topic so you now have some current and ever-changing content on your new blogger site.
Step 5. Add a few more widgets to your side bar which there are plenty to choose from in blogger called "add a page element" like, pictures, video, lists,link, and yes even Adsense plus a whole lot more and you pretty much have a good start.
Step 6. Here is the best part. Go to Spicy Page and join, yes its FREE too, add your new blogger site to their listings. Once again this all FREE to set up.
Step 7. Sit back with a cup of coffee and wait. Within about 24 - 48 hours. I had the number 4 spot listed in google with the search term "Coochie Pop", and "Celebrity Coochie" in 48 hours after submission.
Im sure anyone wanting to test this experimant can find a better keyword than I did, but the concept is still the same. I plan to experiment a little further so if you decide to do a search result on google you may find my site has moved around in the ranks a bit. Either way I would be interested in your comments and results on any tests you try.
Have fun and hope this helps spark some interest in blogger which is a great program. You can find any NEW information on my results of this test at my blog site
Good Luck
